He played the role of Russia's president on the American TV show House of Cards. He was awarded an International Emmy Award in 2018 for his performance in the Danish television drama Herrens Veje, which was broadcast in the UK in 2019 under the name Ride Upon the Storm. Mikkelsen is proficient in English, Swedish and German. He is also able to speak multiple accents. According to Mikkelsen's sources that he and his brother were taught English through Monty Python records.
